Boost Your Expertise and Build Your Reputation

The success of any business in today’s competitive market depends largely on establishing and maintaining professional, friendly and efficient service. It’s also important to build that ‘trust and respect’ factor, as often people will do business with those they’ve developed a good relationship with.

You can learn to attract and retain clients by using your expertise to build your reputation. Focus on one or two subjects that you are passionate and well informed about and try my success strategies:

1) Identify your speciality or niche
When we first go into business we all like to believe that ‘everybody’ will like and buy our product/service. We tend to use scattered marketing rather than targeted marketing, which wastes our precious time and money. One of the valuable lessons I have learned is: you can’t please all people all the time.

An effective strategy is to identify and specialise in one particular area or niche. We’re all multi-talented, so just choose whatever it is you are passionate about right now or your preferred area of expertise.

2) Publish well-written articles on blogs, websites and online directories
Experts recognise ‘article marketing’ as an effective, low-cost method of making themselves known to a global audience. Google tells us to use it to ‘drive traffic to our website.’

As most people are busy, I suggest writing one or two page articles that are interesting and informative for the reader. Write on specific topics about what you do using hints and tips or how you are successfully using your products. Be aware that ‘blatant advertising’ of your business/product/service won’t be accepted as an article – that’s classed as an advertorial. You can promote yourself in a short bio at the base of the article and remember to include your website link if you have one.

3) Be a volunteer in committees and/or professional organisations
Becoming actively involved in relevant committees and organisations connects you to other key members in your field and keeps you up-to-date with issues, projects and events.

4) Join member websites and participate in forums
There are many free and low-cost ways to promote your products or services, and two are joining member websites and participating in online forums. You can support others in business, share your expertise, express your opinion or recommend resources. The aim of this is to build your reputation as a friendly, knowledgeable and generous person.

5) Present Seminars & Workshops
Yes, public speaking may be your worst fear – but you’ll need to overcome that fear if you want to be seen as authentic! Unleash your inner entrepreneur and exude your energy, passion and enthusiasm by being seen and heard. Seminars and workshops open a multitude of opportunities to network and grow your reputation - and your business.

6) Gain Media Exposure
Prepare, or have someone prepare, a media release about a new and exciting business launch or product development. Journalists are always seeking new topics that are newsworthy and you can also approach them for media sponsorship to host and/or promote an upcoming event. Local papers, magazines, radio and television shows are the best way to gain early experience with the media – and mostly it is free.

7) Create Books, E-books, Tele-seminars or CD’s
You don’t have to be a professional author to write a book! For some, writing is a gift which flows and, for others, writing is a skill that is learned by doing. Either way, the more you write the better you become! Start by writing articles and then build ‘book ideas’ based upon your training, areas of expertise and/or life experience. If writing doesn’t interest you, choose to host a tele-seminar or record a CD.

Some other suggestions are - review another person’s book, interview an expert or be interviewed yourself and to participate in events and then write about them.

I‘m hoping this article has stirred lots of ideas in your imagination! If you need assistance in any of the above, I can certainly help you, so please do not hesitate to contact me.
